Monetary Chaos in the Early Republic

After gaining independence (1783), the U.S. still relied on foreign coins (like Spanish dollars), colonial-era currencies, and even barter.

The Coinage Act of 1792

This act established the U.S. dollar and authorized the creation of the Philadelphia Mint.

Political Significance

The first U.S. silver dollar had to reflect the new nation’s ideals: Liberty on the obverse (front) symbolized republicanism, while the eagle on the reverse (back) represented national strength.

• Designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, inspired by Greco-Roman art, but criticized as "too feminine."
• The eagle is surrounded by a wreath, with the full country name—the first time it appeared on a U.S. coin.
• Only ~1,758 were minted in 1794, and many had weak strikes or uneven edges due to primitive technology.

Why It’s Rare

• Extreme Scarcity: Only ~130-150 survive today, with about 20 in excellent condition.
• 2013 Auction Record: A near-perfect PCGS SP66 specimen sold for $10 million in 2013, setting a world record.
